SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat with Matthew Brensilver -- The Seven Factors of Awakening
DESCRIPTION:The Buddhist path is often characterized as a path of letting go. We practice letting go of clinging. Yet\, the path is not merely about what we relinquish\, it is about cultivation. What do we cultivate? The seven factors of awakening – mindfulness\, investigation\, energy\, joy\, tranquility\, concentration\, and equanimity – refer to both psychological qualities we can develop as well as practices to be undertaken. When fully developed\, they express a life of understanding and love. In this day\, we will explore these qualities of heart and how they can function in our lives. All are welcome. \nWhat to Bring: Please bring a lunch\, beverage and appropriate clothing for outside walking meditation \nSuggested Donation: $25 – $75\nNo one turned away for lack of funds \nFor More Information Contact\nBarbara Dondero at barbdondero@gmail.com \nBio:  Matthew Brensilver\, PhD\, began practice in the Tibetan tradition\, and since 2003 has studied with Shinzen Young. He served as a Buddhist chaplain at USC for four years and teaches about the intersection of mindfulness and mental health at UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center and with Mindful Schools. He completed the Spirit Rock/IMS teacher training program (2016) and regularly offers retreats at Spirit Rock and the Insight Retreat Center. He spent years doing research on addiction treatment at the UCLA Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine and continues to be interested in the unfolding dialogue between dharma and science.

SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat with Jill Satterfield - Cultivating Our Inner Awareness: The Practices and the Benefits
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday September  29th\, Napa Valley Insight Meditation will host a daylong retreat with guest teacher Jill Satterfield. \nCultivating Our Inner Awareness: The Practices and the Benefits \nBoth ancient contemplative practices and modern science tell us that exteroception\, perception of the outside world\, coupled with the ability to know and track what’s occurring internally called interoception supports an emotional and mental landscape of ease\, confidence and presence. Called inner and outer awareness in contemplative traditions\, these skills offer the capacity to recognize how our environment\, conversations\, job\, and daily stressors affect us at the deepest level – and how to benefit from this information. \nTo cultivate inner awareness is to increase our capacity to be compassionate\, sensitive and receptive to ourselves and to others. Being internally aware gives us an array of possibilities – for self regulation and care\, for reflection and then action in the world and as a tool to be more available and present for others. \nThis day will include the practices of: \n\nBreathing techniques to cultivate kindness and spaciousness\nMindfulness of the body practices while seated\, standing\, walking and lying down\nInner awareness practices while in conversations with others\n\nInquiry and discussion into: \n\nHow to be and the benefits of connecting to ourselves and others without expectation\nHow and why internal awareness is an antidote to depression and anxiety\nHow inner awareness betters presence with others\nHow inner awareness is a skillful means to cultivate compassion\n\nFor more information about Jill go to: JillSatterfield.org
