Cheryl is a playwright\, filmmaker\, and a UCLA certified mindfulness teacher who has also graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Dedicated Practitioner and Advanced Practitioner programs. She has been practicing Buddhist meditation since 1995\, was trained to teach by Rodney Smith of Seattle Insight\, and has been teaching Dharma and meditation classes worldwide since 2007. Now based in Southern California\, Cheryl has served on the Teachers Councils at Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Center and Insight Community of the Desert. \nCheryl has participated in research and education on meditation and chronic pain\, stress reduction and substance addiction. She is a guiding teacher with Mindful Schools\, teaches mindfulness-based relapse prevention at Foundations Recovery Network and offers community mindfulness lectures and classes to the public. In addition to her work as a playwright and filmmaker\, Cheryl is the co-executive producer of VisionLA Climate Action Arts\, a nonprofit that engages the arts and entertainment communities in the sustainability movement. She is keenly interested in the promise of ethical mindfulness as a tool for social change.

How do we look inward and hold the truth of\nour experience without falling into states of overwhelm and\nparalysis? How do we look outward at the world around us\nand find the resolve to take meaningful action while also\nmaintaining a sense of balance and equanimity? \nDuring this half-day retreat\, which is open to experienced\nmeditators as well as those who are new to the practice\, we\nwill participate in periods of meditation\, gentle movement and\nreflective exercises. She co-leads and organizes East Bay Meditation Center’s weekly Teen Sangha and is a mindfulness and meditation instructor with the Mind Body Awareness Project. Syra graduated East Bay Meditation Center’s yearlong Commit to Dharma program in 2011 and is a current participant in Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s 2 year Community Dharma Leaders training program. \nOur evening sittings generally begin with a 30 minute meditation\, followed by a short break for tea and greetings. His most recent book is entitled “Crazy Wisdom Saves the World Again! (Stonebridge) His other bestselling books include Essential Crazy Wisdom (Ten Speed Press)\, The Big Bang\, The Buddha\, and the Baby Boom (HarperSanFrancisco)\, and Buddha’s Nature (Bantam). He is also the founder and co-editor of the Theravada Buddhist journal “Inquiring Mind.” \nMr. Nisker has studied Buddhist meditation for three decades with teachers in Asia and America\, and for the past 15 years has been leading his own retreats and workshops in Buddhist insight meditation and philosophy at venues internationally. He is an affiliate teacher at the Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre\, California. \nOur evening sittings generally begin with a 30 minute meditation\, followed by a short break for tea and greetings.
